How is it technically impossible to upload my text?
Chrome extensions declare a Content Security Policy (CSP) in their manifest. PrivWrite sets connect-src: none, which tells your browser to block ALL outbound network connections from the extension — at the browser kernel level. Even if our code accidentally tried to make a network request (it doesn't), your browser would block it. No promises, no trust required — just your own browser enforcing the rule.
What AI does PrivWrite use?
PrivWrite uses Chrome's built-in AI (on-device language model available in Chrome 138+). The model runs directly on your machine — your GPU or CPU — with no API key and no network calls required. If on-device AI isn't available, PrivWrite falls back to 25+ built-in grammar rules that still catch the most common errors.
Does PrivWrite work on all websites?
Yes. PrivWrite works anywhere you can select text — Gmail, Google Docs, LinkedIn, Twitter, news articles, bank portals, and more. Simply select text on any page and right-click to check it.
How is PrivWrite different from LanguageTool?
LanguageTool went paid-only in March 2026, removing free access for 6 million users. Even when free, LanguageTool still sent your text to their servers (though they claimed not to store it). PrivWrite never sends text anywhere — on-device only — and keeps its free tier free permanently.
What happens when I reach 20 free checks?
The counter resets every day at midnight. If you need more than 20 checks per day, upgrade to Pro for unlimited checks. 20 checks covers most casual users — if you're a heavy user, Pro at $4.99/mo is less than half of Grammarly's $12/mo.
